Authentication & system requirements

Authentication Methods

PressReader (web and app version) is available to patrons by various ways of connection. As a subscriber to PressReader, we need ensure this service is provided to those you wish to grant access to. The following methods communicate to PressReader that the user indeed has sponsored access courtesy of your institution.

IP Address

IP authentication is a great way to secure your HotSpot and authenticate guests when they are onsite. It is very specific and targeted.

How to set up?

In order to set up IP authentication for your library, please email your IP address(es) to libraries@pressreader.com. IPs must be:

  • Public
  • Static
  • IPV4

PressReader verifies all IP addresses to ensure they are indeed accurate to the library's/institute's location. Please notify us of any exceptions you are aware of ie. hosts from other locations or organizations that should belong to your account.

To find your IP address, visit http://whatismyipaddress.com/.

IP addresses of the type 10.*.*.*, 172.[16-31].*, and 192.168.*.* are reserved for use in internal networks such as computers behind a firewall or proxy server that are not useful for authentication purpose.

Your IP is determined in the agreement with your Internet Service Provider. It is often possible to upgrade to a static IP address for professional use.

How will patrons authenticate?

IP troubleshooting

IP connection is very straight forward to troubleshoot. If a patron it’s not being to authenticated, it could be that:

  1. The patron is not connected to the library's network or,
  2. The IP address is not registered with PressReader.

To determine what IP address is being used, simply ask the patron to visit http://whatismyipaddress.com/ and send you a screen shoot.

URL Referrer

Referring URL Authentication is a method to offer patrons off-site access from your website by setting up an authenticated link to PressReader from a secure and/or password-protected web page. When a user clicks on the PressReader URL, our referring URL uses a standard HTTP Referrer command to verify the URL of your webpage that directs them to PressReader. If this URL is registered on PressReader, the user will be granted access.

How to set up?

Please send us the URL where PressReader link is located in a secure part of your website, as well as login credentials to test the access. Please note:

  • URL referral should be located behind a “sign-in page” to secure access to publishers’ content.
  • Both http and https are supported. For https, the redirect must run directly to https://www.pressreader.com (not http://pressreader.com).

Example URL Referrer: https://www.exampleuniversity.edu/library/databases/

The SSL-certificate is bound only to subdomains of www.PressReader.com. Once the account has been set up, please visit the website to make ensure service is properly promoted to your patrons.

How will patrons authenticate?

Patrons will visit the library's website, locate PressReader link, and enter their login credentials. After successfully logging in, they will be directed to the PressReader website.

Please note, URL Referrer is used for patrons accessing by a web browser. For patrons who would like to use the app, they should first access PressReader through the browser. Once connected to PressReader, sign in or sign up with a personal account. This will enable users to "carry their extended access” from the URL authentication to their personal PressReader account. When they sign in to the app with this PressReader account (email and password), limited amount of time (usually 24 hours) of access will be granted before having to re-authenticate their device. For more information on how to access PressReader offsite, visit our tutorial here.

URL Referrer troubleshooting

If patrons are not being authenticated, please check if this is an isolated case or if multiple users are experiencing the same issue.

If this is an isolated issue, you should be able to identify one of the following problems:

  • Patron has invalid library login credentials.
  • Patron’s device does not meet minimum requirements to access PressReader.

If access problems are occurring throughout, please notify libraries@pressreader.com with detailed description of your connection attempts.

Proxy

PressReader enables libraries to authenticate users through a proxy server as long as access to the proxy server is restricted to authorized users at your institution.

How to set up?

To enable proxy authentication for your institution, please send us your proxy server IP address, URL to PressReader link, and login credentials so we can test the access.

How to set up Sierra and EzProxy?

In addition to server IP, URL and login credentials, please ensure,

  • you have set up our latest stanza configurations found below,
  • EzProxy version is 6.1 or higher,
  • and TLS 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 enable is enabled.

Geo fencing

Geo fencing is a virtual perimeter we create around your library that notifies people nearby: PressReader is available at your library. The value of this is to drive traffic and create brand awareness. As a library, you are a resource for collections of stories and information. With PressReader, you are also a leader in providing premium newspaper and magazine content from all over the world.

Geo fencing grants patrons and guests access to PressReader for a predetermined time, courtesy of your library. For libraries, the standard duration is 3 hours. This is granted through our publishers to protect their content. To activate this on a mobile device, simply download PressReader app and enable gifts.
